pea soup

Aside from the intense summers here in Sacramento, the other thing we are known for is the fog. Thick, pea soup fog where you can barely see but a few feet in front of you. It rolls in from the river which runs along the city and can get a little scary when you're driving in it.

It came in yesterday as I drove my son to school. It's actually very pretty, giving the tall pine trees in my neighborhood a mystical forest feel. It's even prettier along the river as the fog settles on the water, making me think of misty moors far far away.

Visibility right now is still pretty good. By January I would barely be able to see the outline of the trees. My son and I were caught in the fog on the freeway at night a few years ago. We got lost coming home and the only way I could tell which way to go was to follow the truck in front of me as closely as I could. It's a very surreal feeling when you can't see what's around you. I prayed the whole 60 miles and have never EVER taken that drive in winter again.

What's the scariest weather you have ever driven in? I imagine snow can be even more daunting. I'm a California girl but we don't have typical California weather here so we're more prepared than the people living in the milder areas. You should see them when they get a few inches of rain!

I hope you're having cozy weather where you are. I know some of you are already knee deep in snow. We are 2 hours away from the snow up in the Sierras and on very, very rare occasions we will get a light dusting here in the city. My son is getting over a yucky cold and I'm hoping I'm not getting it too.

Have a comfy, cozy, creative weekend.

Hi Anna...I've been in your part of the country with the fog.....not fun.

When we drive the country in our little bus....we will run into some unusual weather at odd times of the year....we have had snow in Idaho, horrible wind in South Dakota, and such rain in Iowa as I have never seen in my life....isn't God grand!!!

I can imagine how scary that must have been! I don't like to drive in dense fog, either. The scariest drive I can remember is when we were driving through Syracuse, NY to visit my hubby's sister - there was a terrible snow storm and cars were pulled over on both sides of the road. I was scared out of my mind!!! My hubby being my hubby - and having grown up in the area - refused to stop and kept driving. Several miles later we were out of the "snow belt." But I was still really shaken. I love snow but I don't care for driving in blinding blizzards! Have a wonderful weekend! Theresa

I love foggy days too. They are beautiful. To drive in it is another things. Glad you and your son made it home safe.

I can see how that could be scary to drive in... but it looks so very magical in the photos. Beautiful even.

I live in Canada, so we have a lot of snow storms. Very scary, but they leave behind something very wonderful. :)

VERY SCARY..! My SCARIEST...Last winter:I was driving home from a dog training class and only had to drive 3 miles to get back home. White out snow conditions,I could not see anywhere I looked. Turned on my emergency flashers and my bright lights. Since I couldn't see I was hoping someone would see me. I was able to find the road to turn on.....and then to my house. I was greatful to get home safe.
Your photos are beautiful.

The fog looks surreal, we get a lot of it here too, or at least I seem to have to drive in it frequently, ha!
Snow is treacherous! If the road commission actually plowed or salted, it'd probably be different, but they seem to be indifferent most of the time, which just leads to needless stupidity and probably accidents... oh, the weather and travel.

Best of luck with your weather!
Have a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
